international organic wine award – Autumn Tasting 2020 474 wines from 19 countries

PAR® contest has been run in virtual space – Key Topic 2020 is the climate change and the international reaction on it

Frasdorf, October 2020 – Likewise in spring 2020, the autumn edition of the international organic wine award took place from October 16th until October 18th in virtual space and strictly complying with PAR®-Standards *). The experience of 26 PAR® Certified Master Tasters based in Germany and Spain and supported by the established digital infrastructure of WINE System AG secured the usual quality and the transparency of the results earning the trust of the organic wine producers from all over the world. The PAR®-Jury has tasted 474 wines from 19 countries awarding 40 Top Gold, 212 Gold, 190 Silver and 25 Compliments.

Germany has submitted 176 wines achieving the most represented position during the autumn tasting 2020, followed by Italy and Austria.  As measured by the number of Top Gold awards, Italian organic wine producers doubtfully took the lead with 19 out of 40 top ratings, followed by Germany and Spain with 8 Top Gold medals each. Also, organic wines from Australia, South Africa, Austria and Hungary could achieve top position.

The exciting range at the top: from artisan way to high tech

Stylistically modern barrique matured 2012 Marche Rosso Igt ´Confusion´ earned 99 points taking the highest position in the category of red wines. A cuvée of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot comes from Terra Argillosa vineyard located in the Italian region Marche. Likewise, 99 points were awarded to the 2013 Curato produced at the Tuscan winery Casa Lucii in the category of dessert wine – a blend of Trebbiano and San Colombano traditionally made in the Caratelli barrel. A traditionally barrique matured 2019 Cuvée Inanna White Wine of Verdejo, Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay grapes could achieve 98 points taking the leading position in the category of whites. This wine is local in the Bodegas Parra Jimenez from the Spanish region La Mancha. A modernly made 2019 Grillante Vino Spumante Grillo DOC BIO from the Cantine Europa sca, Sicily, could achieve 98 points that shoot it to the pinnacle in the category of sparkling wine.

The reductively steel-tank made 2019 Schillerwein QbA trocken coming from Lauffener Weingärtner eG , Baden-Wuerttemberg that earned a Gold medal with 95 points was the best in class in the rosé category.

„Flexibility and Know-how are increasingly important factors“

One of the topics that again strongly influenced the tasting was the impact of the worldwide climatic change. Head of the tasting Martin Darting says: „It is always surprising to discover how the frequently invoked grape variety characteristic dwindles away under the influence of the rapidly changing climate situation. Even red and white wines show the resemblance in the aroma profiles under the condition of comparable climatic situation.“

Other features include the wide variety of how differently the winemakers interpret the growing and producing wine. The distinction between the modern stylistic delivering fruity, clear, bright wines unpretentious to the origin and the terroir-expressive ones was evident.

Martin Darting continues: “Winemakers from all over the world are about to decide whether coping with the new situation by applying the new wine styles or using all possible means of traditional artisan oenology to maintain the established typicity. This creates very different types of wine. We observe that flexibility and know-how are the increasingly important factors, both in the vineyard and in the cellar.“

In order to be better able to respond to steadily growing diversity in the international organic wine industry, the jury consisting of PAR® Certified Masters uses the oenological parameters like oxidation, reduction, traditional and modern style along with common categories like red or white wine. The range was extended by adding three stylistic subcategories during the spring edition 2020 to provide better online-ranking filtering: natural wine, terroir wine and extract accentuated wine.

New: free online seminar available to all participants

Following the contest, Wine System AG offers a free-of-charge online seminar dedicated to the correct analysis of the PAR® datasheet to secure the maximum possible information. The objective is to explain the approach of the tasters as well as the meaning of the single parameters. Likewise, the seminars give practical incentives on how to apply the results at the vineyard. Two different dates are available in English and German.

In compliance with the PAR® method, the auditors operate in a crew of two, also during the online tasting. At the first step, each wine is tasted separately. A discussion follows this process. Once a consensus reached, the results will be thoroughly documented.
